Adventure travel companies featured on picked up the story about starting an adventure travel business. Frontiers Travel, Ciclismo Classico, Xola Consulting, Inc., and Adventure Life are featured as successful companies that have taken the right steps to grow their businesses.

The story, which focuses on CEOs Mollie Fitzgerald of Frontiers, Lauren Hefferon of Ciclismo Classico, and Christina Heyniger of Xola, was first posted August 19 for Women Entrepreneur.

Fitzgerald, Hefferon and Heyniger provide tips for starting an adventure travel company. For instance:

Hefferon took the importance of location to heart when she founded Ciclismo Classico in 1988. She was the first to specialize in cycling tours of Italy, and Ciclismo Classico still offers many tours to places no other tour company goes. Hefferon led eight women on Ciclismo Classico’s first tour, called Tuscany and the Enchanting Island of Elba. At that time, many tours were taking travelers to Tuscany, so Hefferon included Elba to add an exotic element to her tour.

Frontiers, founded by Mollie’s parents, Mike and Susie Fitzgerald, was one of the first adventure travel tour operators. Today, Frontiers offers luxury trips through its Elegant Journeys division in addition to a multitude of unique sporting trips.

Heyniger founded Xola Consulting in 2004. She has worked with the Adventure Travel Trade Association and The George Washington University to produce the innovative Adventure Tourism Development Index, which assesses a country’s potential to be the next best adventure travel destination. Xola works with individuals interested in starting an adventure travel business as well as with governments of countries that are looking to improve their appeal to adventure travelers.
